Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

To what section in the school library do many of my students flock? Answer: The sports section! Sadly, we cannot go to the school library every day. However, the sports literature collection in my classroom library is pitiful! You can help me change this.

Most of the students in my class are either English language learners or have parents who speak little English.

Language and socio-economic status are both major factors in our day to day lives. In fact, 82% of our students are poor enough to receive free lunch daily. Most of their parents are immigrants with dreary, low-paying jobs. This year many parents have reported to me that they've lost their job while some are working two, even three jobs, just to make ends meet! Ever stayed at a fancy Florida hotel? Our moms and dads may have made your bed or cooked your meals. Despite all of this, my students are vibrant and eager learners!

My Project

Every day, during language arts time, we have D.E.A.R. time (Drop Everything And Read!). Most of my students use books from our classroom library. One section that is lacking material is my sports section. Many of my boys, and some of my girls, love sports! They read the same few books I have on sports over and over. It would be wonderful if they could have more books on sports. I envision several of my students pouring through brand new sports books - even my reluctant readers - excited, perhaps jockeying for position to be the first one to read that book about football or that book about Jackie Robinson!

Literacy is an ongoing struggle at our school and in my classroom.

Our students need all the encouragement we can give them. Please encourage my sports enthusiasts to go from reluctant readers to eager readers!
