My Students

Help my youngest readers! The shelves and furniture in our library are designed for older grade-school children. We now have four and five year olds that come to the library once a week. They have a difficult time reaching the books they want because many of our shelves are too high!

I am the librarian of a small but dynamic inner-city elementary school.

The younger children love hearing and reading stories. Even when they can not read the actual words, they act out what they believe the stories to be. They are crazy about books! I have to be on hand when they are present, however, to physically get them some of the books they want. They can not reach the books on the higher shelves. The students also have a difficult time remembering from where the books were taken, so they often put the books away incorrectly.

My Project

I need a unique and practical reading center that will be used exclusively by these younger students. This center is a wooden structure with shelves for books and story-related items. The reading center also has special outside areas that hold additional books. The center will hold 300-400 books at a time. The children will be able to reach easily any book they want. Also, the books would not have to be put away in strict alphabetical order, so clean-up will be much easier.

Going to the library should be a wonderful, exciting experience.

Your help will make Library Time at my school much more enjoyable for these young readers. They will have the freedom to choose the books they want independently. They will also have a special place they know that is just for them!
