Where in the World Are We?

My students need a U.S. and world map that can be used for class discussions, enabling them to connect with current and historical issues.

My Students

My students have had limited opportunities to view the world beyond their neighborhood. At the same time, they are capable and curious, and are interested in understanding where we are compared to where things are happening in the news.

My 4th grade students are inner city children, many of whom have difficult family and financial situations.

Most are raised by single parents or grandparents. They are sweet kids, and most are excellent students. They need a lot of social and academic support and encouragement. They attend a PK-8th grade school that is a community of learners focused on balanced literacy and successful standardized test scores. We are a "college prep elementary school" because we instill the importance of academic success early on in the students' educations. We believe these students have bright futures!

My Project

My students deserve an opportunity to visualize places being discussed, as many students are visual learners. To be able to pull down a map and have a discussion, students might be better able to understand when there is an earthquake in Haiti or Chile; where President Obama resides in the White House; how the weather fronts move across North America from west to east; when we are discussing where the original colonies are located; where the triangle trade routes were; where dinosaur bones were located, etc. When we begin studying states next month, the large classroom maps could provide a foundation for rich discussion. Perhaps the students could better visualize where Harriet Tubman guided slaves from the south to the north. At this time, such a vision and understanding is much more intangible. For children whose minds are just developing from concrete to abstract learning, this set of maps will be an important tool to scaffold their learning about many topics.

Students will not only learn through direct instruction and discussion, but they will also be able to lead discussion utilizing the world and US map.

There is a severe space limitation in the classroom, but there is room to mount the maps along the front board. Through the acquisition of the maps, these amazing children will have a greater perspective of where they are in the world, and provide a foundation for greater global understanding.
