My Students

"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."- Marcus Garvey. Too often in the study of history my students do not see themselves in the textbook. With this project they will have a chance to tell the histories of their own communities.

My students are a diverse group of socio-economically disadvantaged students who attend a large urban high school.

Our school is ethnically and linguistically diverse and faces many problems common to urban schools. Many of our students are immigrants or the children of immigrant parents. A majority of the students at our school who attend college are the first in their families to do so.

My Project

I am asking for four Flip Cam video cameras in order to implement an oral history project in both my American Democracy and US History classes. My US History students will interview either family members, or members of their communities who participated in or witnessed an important event in history. They will gain a first person perspective that will help to bring the event to life, add to their complexity of understanding and challenge their assumptions. They will also post the interview and transcript on-line, adding to the historical record. Students in my American Democracy class will interview members of their communities who have taken part in civic action for democratic change. They will also transcribe these interviews and post them to the Civic Voices website. By hearing first hand what it means to fight for a more democratic society, my students will hopefully be inspired to take action and become more engaged in our democracy.

Through this oral history project they will go from being students to becoming historians and researchers. This project will empower them, and will allow them to let their voices and the voices of their community be heard. Finally, this project will be their first lesson in field research, and methodology. These will be invaluable tools to take with them as they head to college.
