First Grade Poets

My students need 38 books for language arts lessons in grammar and poetry.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids are natural poets because they see the world through different lenses than adults do. They are able to compare and contrast, relate, and string words together in unique ways, so long as they are provided with the language and writing foundation.

My first-grade classroom is like a mini-United Nations.

Eight different linguistic or ethnic cultures are represented. 85% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They come to school with a variety of experiences and stories. I am amazed everyday to see how they come together to share, problem solve, and create as twenty-one individuals but also one cohesive class. Their hard work and achievement constantly impress me.

My Project

I am beginning an in-depth poetry unit for the first time. In the past, I have read examples of poetry and the students have created pattern books that follow a particular author's example. This year, however, I am envisioning student-created poems that go much further. I want to begin with similes and move onto poems that describe colors using the senses. I want to try acrostic poems and perhaps haiku. The books in this grant have been carefully selected as model texts, or books that I can read aloud to illustrate a part of speech.

I am very excited about this new poetry unit and I can't wait to see what the students create.

My hope is to expand the unit more in the coming years, using what I learn this year as a launching pad. The books I am requesting will be used by hundreds of students in the years to come. I am sure there are many surprises in store for me as I explore this literary genre. Thank you for supporting my teaching, our classroom, and public education!
