My Students

Latin is a required class in our school. The students love the history and mythology of Ancient Rome, but they have difficulty with the grammar. Over the years I have discovered that the real difficulty is their poor grasp of English grammar. These books will help them understand both languages.

We are a public school in a major city.

We are like a magnet school in that our students come from all over the city to attend. Well over a thousand students apply for admittance each year but only a few hundred are admitted. Our students are very bright and are expected to attend top liberal arts colleges when they graduate. They are required to take Latin for four out of their six years here. Our students are literally from all over the world. They are of every religion, culture, and language. Most are first generation American and most will be the first in their families to go to college. Whether they are native speakers or foreigners, nearly all have difficulty with English grammar. It is this difficulty with English that makes Latin more difficult, especially when they translate Cicero and Pliny.

My Project

With these grammar books, I will show students how sentences are created, how meaning is build from word order, and how if they master on language that the next is even easier. I discovered this book years ago and have been recommending it to parents ever since. Now I'd like to have a set for for my classroom so that all my students, both this near and the years to come, can better understand the rules of Latin grammar. For, once the "rules" are learned, the adventure of the Romans can be unlocked.

These books will make a difference because they are the only ones I have seen that directly address the relationship (or lack thereof) between English and Latin grammar.

English is a Germanic language but it is heavily influence by Latin. These books explain this complex relationship better than any other I have seen. Their use in the classroom will be immeasurable.
