Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, our school district, along with many others in the country, is dealing with big budget cuts. Many school librarians and most librarian assistant positions have been eliminated. Because of this, it's really difficult for teachers to obtain class sets of books through Inter-library loans.

My fifth graders attend a high-poverty rate public school in Arizona.

Many of them come from families who have recently immigrated to the U.S. Their mothers and/or fathers are often not in their daily lives because many are raised by grandparents or aunts or uncles for various reasons.

My Project

My students love to read, BUT they're easily turned off or bored by stories in our "reading book." However, their interest in literature has truly been sparked by the quality novels we've read in our class so far this year. Titles such as Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, The Higher Power of Lucky, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and Bridge to Terabithia have ignited a sense of wonder, a love of reading, and a deeper level of understanding than can be gained in a "reading book." When You Reach Me is the intriguing 2010 Newbery Award winner that is part mystery, part science fiction, but totally engaging. I'm certain my students will be dying to find out who is leaving 6th grader Miranda hand-scrawled notes from the future, and what friend of hers he or she will save. This book is a fascinating tale of changing friendships, family, time travel, a crazy guy on the corner, and a sandwich shop.

We've got probably a month of reading left in the novel we're currently reading in class, (and I've got so many kids who are "sneaking" through the book reading ahead—can't complain about that!) and no more sets of novels for us to read.

What's a teacher to do? Plow through our reading books, or try to get some more novels? Well, I'm opting for choice two, but I'll need your help. Thanks in advance!
