Real World CSI in the Classroom!

My students need supplies and supplemental experiments for a forensics class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bring excitement to science experiments! Many of my students don't see that connection until its too late, I want to not only teach but inspire students to view science as a real world application that can help save lives and solve crime.

We have a high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch meal plans, parents who never graduated from college, and a community plagued with high crime rates and violence.

Despite these challenges,my students decided to enroll in a a charter focusing in math and science. Their interest to become more than the product of their community shows their love of learning and desire to overcome these challenges. Many of our students have found this school to be a sanctuary amidst the violence surrounding them. Our student population is composed of 99% Latino with most being first generation college bound students. We are a fairly small school with a student population of about 650 and have been in operation for 6 six years.

My Project

The materials and kits will be used to enhance and supplement science learning in my class. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of science in various CSI related activities. One of the units will be to study how blood spatter patterns can provide clues on the suspect and method during a murder scene. Students will understand the logical steps investigators work with evidence. Student's lives will change because they will see the correlation between science and a real world application. By understanding pieces of information such as ballistics, blood, soil analysis and DNA analysis students will begin to see a path by which they can understand the world around them. The activities will expose them how to interpret data, synthesize a compelling scenario and evaluate any evidence that can lead them to the culprit. Students will then expand on their scientific knowledge of biology, physics and chemistry to apply it in a forensic setting.

Forensics has really helped my students appreciate science.

Students today need to see concrete examples of how science plays a role in their lives. With your donation, you will help my students understand that science can be cool. It has endless applications and with that I hope we can inspire the new generation of scientific minds.
