Where in the World? The Map-Quest Begins

My students need 30 current world atlases to use during social studies instruction - our current world atlases were published in 1987!

My Students

"Where does your family come from?" My students and their families come from all around the world. As a group we represent nations from El Salvador to Russia, Sweden to Eritrea. It is a beautiful mix of cultures, now if only our atlases included half of these countries!

Working in a low income school is an amazing experience.

My students and their families are the most giving of people. For a community of people that struggle financially, they are the first to offer help to those in need; bringing in food for the food drive, clothes for the clothing bank and pennies for earthquake relief in Haiti. Many of my students are first generation Americans and their parents work two and three jobs to make ends meet. The struggles of life for these families is sometime overwhelming. My students love to laugh and share stories about themselves and where their families originated. Unfortunately, our current atlases were published before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The world has changed, yet on our maps it stands still.

My Project

We are hoping to receive 30 current classroom atlases that the students can use during social studies. These will help my students to see where each family originated and feel more connected to one another and the world. We will use the maps to explore and discover not only the politics and geography of each continent, but also to learn about the five themes of geography. In a global society, I feel that it is important for them to see and understand the different aspects of geography and how it relates to them.

Please help us to discover the current world around us - not just the one prior to 1987.

These atlases will help me to teach my students more than just geography, but it will allow us to see where we fit into the bigger picture of the world. Thank you so much!
