A Moving Window to the World of Information

My students need a netbook computer.

My Students

My students ACHE for technology in the classroom. Any bit they get is like finding an Orange Julius in the desert!

I teach Freshman and Senior English Classes in an inner-city vocational high school in New York State.

Many of my students are planning on attending college after graduation, but in many cases they are very unprepared for the type of work they will be asked to do. Their greatest deficit is the amount of access to technology within the walls of the building. In college they will be expected to do so many things; completing online and database research, creating PowerPoint and other multimedia presentations, accessing email and online "blackboard" programs, and even being able to tell the difference between trustworthy and questionable online sources. In terms of that last issue, it becomes difficult when a student only gets structured Internet access once a week at best. The other issues are even more difficult to address with computer access so limited. I do have two computers in my classroom, but with classes of 35 students it is a challenging task to give each student access.

My Project

The donation of a small netbook computer to the class would add mobility to our computer access. The computer could be easily passed around between students while class is in session, and students would be able to do online research, type essays, or work on other task which do not require a larger computer to accomplish. The computer would also allow students to work on projects in different rooms than mine, giving them the opportunity to continue course work in study halls and lunch periods if necessary.

Your donation will put a working computer in the excited hands of students in my classroom, and allow them to practice the research, typing, creative and analytical skills they will need to be successes in college and beyond.
