My Students

Wouldn't it be great to be able to recreate the literature text book so that it mirrored your units? By creating our own text book we will be able to piece together various types of literature that are well connected to the novels that we read in class, such as "Peter Pan" and "The Wizard of Oz."

My students are motivated learners.

They have worked hard this year through various projects and are currently working to complete a production of "The Wizard of Oz." This production is being put together sans funding and sans a theater department. Each student has an independent job that contributes to the betterment of the production. I am continually impressed their ideas and with their diligence. Before the production, students completed a 4-6 page research paper in M.L.A. formatting on a topic that could be traced back to "The Wizard of Oz." For example, one student completed a project on hot air balloons. He even created one! After the paper, we read the novel. It has been a great experience for the students because, just like Dorothy, they are on the road of self discovery. Middle school is a tough road for us all.

My Project

I try my best to maintain a connection between themes and authors throughout the year so that I may reinforce ideas for my students. As students develop as writers, I try to show them that the author's whose texts they are reading are real people with good advice about becoming a writer. In order to keep things fluid, I have to pull resources from various texts, websites, and resource books. Most of what my students read in class comes from somewhere other than the state textbook, but it is well aligned with the curriculum. This enables students to activate prior knowledge on a consistent basis in my classroom. Being able to keep all of these resources in one place, so that students may reference different sheets throughout the year, would undoubtedly be beneficial for all involved. My students need page protectors and folders with fasteners so that we can keep all of our reading materials in one place.

It is very important that my class be able to have Our Text in a format that is easy to access.

The connections we make throughout the year are not accessible through the standard literature textbook, but they are imperative in order for students to become holistic thinkers.
