iTouch Speaks for Students

My students need a iTouch to use as a communication device to look like their peers in the community.

My Students

My students do not speak. They use cumbersome devices that call attention to them in the community. Apple offers a program that can be used on an iTouch. This device is easily used (touch screen) and can speak for the students.

I have 11 students with severe multiple disabilities.

Nearly half are autistic. Most do not speak at all. All of the students need assistance from icons and speaking devices to be understood. We are a special day class separate from the district classes. These students are challenged by autism, acting out behaviors, and inability to speak. We teach students to be more independent in the classroom and community. Students are encouraged to express themselves in anyway possible.

My Project

With the iTouch, a student will order a meal at the cafeteria, greet the cashier at the grocery store, tell what they did last night. Looking like their peers gives my students the confidence to take the communication device into public. It enables them to speak for themselves and develop their independence out of the classroom. Funding for such a device is very hard to obtain as it is viewed as entertainment.

Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to understand and to be understood in the community.

After a period of practice, a justification can be written to obtain a personal device from public funding. Without your support, some students may never receive a personal communication device.
