My Students

Have you read poems from Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, or other famous poets? If so, I'm sure you know the power of poetry. Through poetry, students are able to express who they are and what they are thinking in a creative and fun way.

Hello!

I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in grades K-5. Our rural elementary school in upstate New York has a student population of 365 students. Students who are at risk of failing the New York State Assessments and students who are having difficulty academically are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services. Despite teachers' attempts to make reading and writing fun, reading and writing has become boring and uninteresting for many children. They have little or no desire to pick up a book to read or a pen to write. Poetry is a genre that many students never get the opportunity to explore because they find little interest in the genre. If students were asked to express their feelings about poetry, most would say it’s “boring”. By exploring famous poets, and by connecting to the poets' words, students will in turn, have a greater appreciation for this genre, and will discover that poetry is actually quite interesting and not boring at all.

My Project

I would like my students to have poems from many great poets, including Walt Whitman, Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and many more. My students will then be able to better connect with poetry and they will have a better understanding of this genre.

My students have not had the opportunity to explore poetry and to fall in love with words.

Your funding will give my students the chance to connect with famous poets of the past and present. They will then be able to get a better understanding of what poetry is and how they too can be poets.
