Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how engaging big books can be? The enlarged artwork and words seems to draw your attention and keep you focused.

My students attend a public school that serves a community considered in the lower economic status.

These students are in the primary grades and have autism. Their disability greatly affects communication and socialization and we rely on educational lessons that are engaging and visually stimulating to be effective in many ways for the students.

My Project

I have found Big Books to be visually stimulating and engages a variety of personalities in a group activity. We have a limited supply of big books and currently are holding them in our lap and trying to read the words upside down. The big book stand will hold the books higher so all the group has a clear view, and students would be able take turns in reading and page turning. The front of our book stand will provide a dry erase board to review key words we will see in our stories. The math set was selected as a way for my students to maintain math skills they are taught during direct instruction by reviewing these skills during a group reading time. This could also provide an opportunity for some students to model acquired skills, such as counting or time, for students who may still be struggling. By reviewing and practicing math skills in a different context I wish for my students to maintain and generalize these important skills.

I have been greatly inspired by my students every day and remain dedicated to their progress.

You too can make a difference by helping us in our quest for a Big Book stand and math set. The Big Books have prove to be of great interest to my students and because I have their attention they are a successful learning tool.
