My Students

"How do you spell this word?" or "What does that mean?" Two of the most frequent questions I often hear my students ask me all the time! When I was a child, I remember hearing the answer, "Look it up in the dictionary!" I would love to be able to give that same answer.

My first grade students who are very inquisitive, are learning to read, write, and also speak.

Rather than rely on the teacher for all the answers, I try to encourage them to think for themselves. I would like to say, "Go and check the Internet dictionary," but by using an actual dictionary they are learning so many more skills! Skills such as: ABC order, research, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, parts of speech and more.

My Project

By having access to a dictionary, students will learn the skills of using a "hands on" dictionary rather than relying completely on the Internet for reference resources. I plan on using these dictionaries for both whole group as well as center activities. They will be used not only for writing (spelling a word, word meanings, nouns/verbs, etc.), but also reading (finding the definition for a word used in a story read - comprehension, ABC order,syllables, etc.)

These are valuable lifelong skills that are not limited to just first grade.

Our class also does a lot of writing in Social Studies as well as Science and even Math! Dictionaries are an invaluable source of information for first graders.
