This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a perfect society. Lois Lowry created one in "The Giver" and David and Jennifer move to one in "Pleasantville," but, in both cases, the characters soon learn the cost of living in these lifeless and emotionless communities.

I teach 10th grade English in a high-need community.

My students are significantly behind their peers in more affluent communities in terms of literacy skills. They have lofty goals for themselves, and we work hard every day to achieve those goals.

My Project

Some of the goals my students have set for themselves involve improving their reading and writing skills, which are essential to their success later in high school and especially in college. In addition to these skills, I want my students to become critical thinkers. To foster critical thinking, I want my students to engage in a unit during which they will compare a theme - the utopian community - presented in both literature - "The Giver" - and film - "Pleasantville". Through the reading and comparative essay, the will develop literacy skills; through the comparison, they will develop strong thinking skills. In order to accomplish this, my students need copies of the resources we will use during this unit.

Help my students grow as readers, writers and thinkers, while developing their view of the perfect community by providing materials for our comparative analysis of "The Giver" and "Pleasantville".
