My Students

My students attend a small rural high school. Due to the poor economic level of our area and low student ratios, we do not receive adequate funding from our county board office to supply the classroom needs of our students.

Our students are caught between two worlds.

Our area used to be a farming community and now it is being consumed by development. Yet family and school economic levels have not caught up with this 21st century world. We are trying to meet this changing environment with little equipment and materials. Our students are hard-working and appreciative of time and materials that are given to them. Their excitement to learn biology makes it worth my effort to prepare for their needs.

My Project

Our student are excited to see the world on a different level. They are taught the first week of class about the levels of organization of the biological world, but it has been difficult to allow the students to see that world. They bring items from nature for us to see, but their observations are often hindered because we only have hand held magnifiers that do not give us the magnifications we need. With the addition of stereo microscopes we could look at the crystalline structure of salts and sugars, or explore the surface features of leaves, or examine the reproductive organs of a flower.

By seeing a new level of biological structure, the students will comprehend the difference between the two-dimensional textbook picture to the three-dimensional structure of real life.

This realization will excite the students to see more of their surroundings and provide another level of understanding to their lives. In addition, they will make the connection that they are part of the world around them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
