Real-World Math Connections for Young Women

My students need 56 different cross-curricular classroom resources, including Spin & Solve Math Games, 20 copies of the book "The Number Devil", Mastering Math Vocabulary Pocket Chart Cards and 10 subscriptions to Time For Kids magazine.

My Students

One of the challenges facing many mathematics teachers is convincing their students that there is a place for mathematics in the real world. My female students are learning how to apply their learning to the real world which will allow for a deeper understanding and retention of mathematical concept.

Our school is a public school serving inner city young women who previously did not have the choice or access to thrive in a single-gender environment.

We believe that an all-female environment will help girls develop the academic skills, as well as the assertiveness and confidence, necessary for college. All students are instilled with a sense of community, ethical principles and responsible decision-making. Our students are expected to achieve, work hard, and expected to go to college.

My Project

Students will use the math manipulatives, specifically, the percent, fraction, and decimal cubes and games to compare and convert these numbers from one to another. Whether the students are looking to purchase items at a store, cook dinner with their families, or read a NASA article detailing the speed of light, understanding this concept and the relationship between these numbers is an essential everyday skill the students need. Furthermore, the students will be able to better understand and see real connections to how math is used or helpful in their lives through the collection of books such as The Number Devil and A Gebra named Al. More engaging assessments may include summaries which will direct students to describe how they connect the center to themselves and the real world. Students will also have the opportunity to describe how they have learned a new concept that was previously misunderstood and detail any misconceptions that were cleared up.

Your donation will not only provide an opportunity for girls to further their learning on their own, but to also differentiate learning in our math classes.

Our real-world math center will support and welcome various learners who may not feel very comfortable in mathematics, or those who are looking to challenge themselves in certain mathematical concepts. We will target values of leadership among young girls and will help them grow into young prepared-for-the-real-world students.
