Getting The Scoop on Current Events

My students need 31 Time for Kids magazines and an "A Word a Day" book.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The future collegiate of 2018 are working hard to achieve their dreams and we believe that great work ethic and determination starts in 4th grade and is something that carries with you the rest of your life. We believe that our classroom is a place to help prepare us for the rest of our lives...

Life skills and the discussion of current events are essential in our classroom as we are in the process of learning what it means to be active educated citizens in a democratic world.

In our collegiate classroom we learn life skills such as reading newspapers, voting and carrying out certain jobs to help our classroom run as a mini self-sustaining community. One of the most essential characteristics of a democratic community is becoming educated on the most current events, which provide students incredible opportunities to form their own opinions, create persuasive papers, participate in debates, or vote in mock elections to see the importance of democracies having active educated citizens.

My Project

Unfortunately, with the lack of resources and a multitude of reading levels trying to becoming educated citizens has become a battle for our class in terms of reading and comprehending the latest issues of the world in newspapers and magazines. Having a subscription to a leveled publication that provides comprehension activities and vocabulary builders correlating with the month's most current events would be an incredible attribute to our classroom and would reinforce the importance of educating oneself through news publications.

Being able to have access to current events at differentiated reading levels would further drive home the importance of educating oneself on the current events of our time regardless of vocabulary knowledge or comprehension level.

Times For Kids will allow my students to break away from the lower level picture books and allow students to see what it is like to read grade level appropriate text that provides for such powerful reflection on today's world.
