Math and Art, What a Crazy Pairing!

My students need beads and needles to complete their Native American Art unit in 5th grade.

Math and Art: who knew they would make a great pair! I teach art to 550 elementary students, ranging from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Our school is fully title 1 with 13 different languages being spoken. For a while I was teaching art from a cart, so this is the first time many of my students have even been in an art room.

My students come from a variety of cultures and we try to learn about each of those cultures in art. However with the budget crisis in our state it has become increasingly harder to teach anything successfully. Unfortunately I don't teach in a school where it is feasible to ask parents for donations when many of them are on the verge of losing everything themselves. My students have asked if they could do the beading lesson I use to teach before the cart that their older siblings had once done. I was successful in securing the looms but as I went to buy the beads and needles I discovered my budget had been cut even more and there was no money left.

My students are needing beads and needles to go with their empty looms that are waiting for use. The best part of this lesson is it not only teaches cultural art but we do lots of math in this art lesson. The students learn about symmetry, counting, and graphing. Their classroom teachers tell me that this has helped with the students math vocabulary tremendously.
