I teach a first grade transitional class in rural North Carolina. We are a high poverty, Title One school. Over 90% of our students are free/reduced lunch. Many of my students have special needs, but they have made amazing progress this year.

My class is currently undertaking a year-long social studies project studying China. Most of my students have never left the state and have very limited life experience and vocabulary. There are currently very few materials in our school library related to the topic.

China has such a rich culture, full of beautiful scenery and rich literature and history. I want to bring this to life for my students through books and DVD's. The books we need are both fiction and non-fiction. My students have developed a love of folk tales which needs to be encouraged. The folk tales and legends of China are amazing and would be enjoyed by many of my students for years to come. The DVD's are also a mixture of fiction and non-fiction and will open a door to another whole world for these children.

Since we are a very low income school, we have very little financial support to provide much needed curriculum materials. It is only with generous donations that we are able to meet our student's needs.
