Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need to see the stars. I am an Astronomy educator (11th & 12th)in an inner city school (90% minority, 90% free or reduced lunch) where what we think is a hard day is nothing for most students. Overcoming obstacles like drugs, alcoholism, teen pregnancy & gangs is a daily occurrence.

Providing critical thinking skills for students opening opportunities for advancement to college is critical in the inner city.

Our students live in an electronic age. This is the doorway to lure them into astronomical education. By using planetarium software it’s like the students control the universe. They can go forward & back in time to see different planetary alignments. They can see what the sky looked like when they were born or what it will look like in 10,000 years. The can also visit any place in the universe, travel there & back & never leave the classroom. These programs are filled with information & complex processes that happen in our universe. By using these programs the students are motivated & instantly start asking “What’s that” “How does that happen” “No way Mister” and I say to that “got you”. They are self motivated & have started an inquiry process where they truly what to learn. This inquiry based learning is a key foundation in any college science program.

My Project

To be able to provide this type of planetarium software requires a new computer with the proper capabilities. The Mac Book Pro laptop is situated for this application. The Starry Night program is an excellent source of curriculum based learning activities. This curriculum based software promotes hands on, inquiry based, higher order thinking skills. This coupled with myself as their passionate educator of the stars is a one two three knock out punch. Starry night is also a valued educational tool which is used by McGraw Hill publications in their astronomy text book Journey to the Cosmic Frontier. Providing quality links to college level science applications. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare my students to be successful in college. I never sell them short and provide the highest level of education that is possible. I am amazed that my student do not expose their high level and abilities. Uncovering their potential abilities comes by motivation & their belief in themselves.

I cannot do this alone.

It takes dedicated people who are fortunate enough to help support our nation,s youth. We all will pay for students who fail out one way or another. We all know this starts with education by providing the best opportunities for students who want & need to see a better future for themselves. You can have a part in providing the resources that will help guiding them on to college. Providing a gateway to Astronomy & Physics is where they need to aspire to.
