My Students

I teach in a second grade regular education classroom that has so many students, we doesn't have enough instruments to meet our needs!

My darling second graders love to perform bi-weekly programs for our grandparent friends in an assisted living center.

This year our class population has ballooned up to 29 students. Even though the students are very motivated to do our ten bi-weekly programs throughout the winter months, we don’t have enough instruments to perform on, even if we are all sharing.

My Project

Research shows that children who are involved in service learning activities get better grades and have more self confidence. Children from my class bond with the grandparents and each year students show more compassion for each other. This transfers to a feeling of community in the classroom. Bullying is non-existent. During each visit with our grandparent friends, my students read. We then perform a program. Students are motivated to memorize poetry, play instruments like ukuleles, rhythm and Orff instruments (xylophones) and dance so they can perform at these programs. Our grandparent friends love these programs. Without enough instruments, many students will not have a turn playing. Students have the chance to feel they make difference in the the lives of others. Your thoughtful contribution will benefit the students and the grandparents. These instruments will be shared with 3 other classes of second graders who repeat the same activity.
