Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Spanish to grades K-8 in a Chicago Public School World Language Academy. For the past 30 years CPS has established magnet schools and programs to bring students from all backgrounds together, to optimize learning-through a magnet theme. Our magnet theme is World Language. My students, especially the primary students, because they are new to the language as well as to their own, would benefit greatly from a classroom that breathes not only the curriculum but the culture. Learning Spanish is much more meaningful when it's a part of regular every day life and not a separate, detached, disconnected lesson. The calendar, the sounds, stickers, materials ... everything should be in Spanish so that the young children become accustomed to the world of Spanish around them.

Have you ever tried learning a language ... and failed? Try a language learning CD and still forgot? Why didn't it stick? It didn't stick because it was separate, disconnected and meaningless. This is an opportunity to provide young language learners with the chance to live the language, beyond the class scheduled time for curriculum.

This project will allow a diverse group of young, intelligent and deserving public school students the opportunity to live the language they're learning. They are truly an exceptional group. Their families value education, work hard and cooperate, volunteer and push their children to their greatest potential. The children are well behaved, bright & big thinkers and love learning. They want to be challenged. Learning language for them so far has been disconnected and so even after x number of years, they can still barely say "Hola, Buenos dias". But with Spanish visuals, sounds, posters, everything, Spanish will become a regular part of their life, just as English is. It is after all how we all learned English.

There are many deserving children in this world. Some are deserving because they are financially unequipped for success; others may be due to unfortunate social situations. My students are deserving because they are those students who aren't poor enough but aren't rich enough either. They are however smart enough and hard working enough. They are the group that can make change happen with just a little more than they currently have. They are the group that has managed to be successful by the family unity and values they've had embedded in them, but simply have the resources for the necessities. Spanish today is a necessity. These students are the ones who always get overlooked because they appear fortunate enough since they're intelligent. They are intelligent because they work and will continue to work as hard as they can and are pushed by their families. They are proud and deserving.
