Many of you love reading yourselves, but may not realize how much these books help students build essential literacy skills. With these new texts, my students are practicing skills like making inferences, analyzing character motivation, identifying themes, strengthening vocabulary through context, and having deeper discussions with peers. These stories give us opportunities to talk about empathy, perseverance, and decision-making, lessons that stay with them far beyond the classroom.\r\nReading in my classroom is active and joyful. Students checkout books bi-weekly that reflect their interests, set reading goals, read independently, and join together to share stories they love. There is always a quiet buzz of excitement as students swap recommendations, ask about the next book in a series, or proudly announce they've finished a novel they never thought they could get through. The headphones and sensory tools have also created a more welcoming environment where every student can focus and feel comfortable during reading time.\r\nSome students have formed especially strong connections to the new books. One student, who historically hasn't liked reading, has now finished multiple titles from the Maze Runner series and continues to ask for more. He comes to school daily, and that is not an exaggeration, and excitedly tells me what he read about the past night. Another group of students is reading the Lemonade War series together and have created a book club for themselves outside of school. These moments remind me how powerful it is when students can see themselves in stories and find books they genuinely enjoy.\r\nYour support has helped my students grow not only as readers, but as thinkers and community members. They will carry this love of literature with them for the rest of their lives and remember these books you helped bring them into adulthood. Thank you for helping me give them the tools, stories, and safe space they need to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1754263799503,"projectUrl":"project/filling-the-shelves-and-fueling-young-mi/9491369/","projectTitle":"Filling the Shelves and Fueling Young Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kosner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7281251_orig.jpg?crop=4284,4284,x0,y956&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753223224082","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/supportmskosner"},{"teacherId":6491248,"projectId":9446709,"letterContent":"Thank you for your help this year. Because the articles are high-interest and often tied to current events, students are not only building reading comprehension but also developing media literacy and critical thinking skills.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading now looks like small groups leaning over a magazine spread, highlighting key ideas, or debating their opinions after reading a paired text.
