Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach music to Pre-K through 5th grade students at a high-needs elementary school. My school has a positive, upbeat atmosphere where children are eager to learn. We have a very devoted group of cluster teachers who work tirelessly on a very small budget to give children opportunities to learn in unique arts-centered ways. Although the administration is very supportive of the music program at our school, we do not have very much money to put towards musical instruments and materials. Donors Choose has helped me to outfit my music classroom (the auditorium stage ☺) with instruments, bright posters, and the very best teaching materials! My students love coming to music class each week and are eager to practice their budding musicianship skills by singing, dancing, composing, and playing instruments.

Recently, my older students in 3rd through 5th grade have been learning to read music by playing the soprano recorder. The fourth grade in particular have fallen in love with the instrument! They ask to come in during lunch and practice. They find me in the hallways to ask me what song we are going to learn to play this week. They sneak into the auditorium on their "way to the bathroom" to listen to other classes play the familiar tunes. Some of my students have even saved up their own money to buy a recorder at the local dollar store so they could PRACTICE AT HOME!! As I am sure you can see, I am completely thrilled by the intense dedication these students have shown over the past few months. There are a few students who have really shown a LOT of potential in their playing during these recorder lessons. They have taken to reading music like it is their second language and take great care to always play with the best tone quality they can muster. For these students, I would like to offer an advanced recorder lunch time class to let them explore more kinds of recorders and to learn to play in multiple parts.

Right now, however, the students only have soprano recorders. We need the other recorder voices to put together a recorder ensemble. We are asking for a combination of alto, tenor, and sopranino recorders to add to our already existing soprano collection. There are so many benefits to a program like this including: learning to listen, count, and play as one unit; developing advanced reading and comprehension skills; practicing good learning habits and self-monitoring skills; and understanding the value of time and commitment.

Most of my students will end up at a middle school that does not have a music program. Knowing that the majority of my students do not have the opportunity to participate in any kind of additional music lessons or programs outside of my class, I try to help them develop life-long musicianship skills that will serve them for many years after graduation. I have so many students who show a lot of natural talent for music. By donating to this project, you will be helping me to provide a unique opportunity for them to enrich their musical studies beyond the classroom music lesson. They may develop their skills so far beyond the elementary level that they could possibly even apply to a middle school with a special music program. My students deserve every chance to advance their musical skills. Please consider donating to this project and fulfilling another student's dreams.
