My Students

Bill Gates said, “Until we're educating every kid in a fantastic way, until every inner city is cleaned up, there is no shortage of things to do." I've been busy trying to educate every kid in a fantastic way, but from the wrong side of the digital divide because I don't have a computer projector.

At the end of every lesson, a half dozen students walk up to the board in order to take a picture of the assignment with their cell phones so they don't have to write it down.

When I posted some instructional videos on You Tube, 80% of my students went on the Internet and watched them that same night. Like most students in our nation today, mine live in a digital world much different than the one I grew up with. They are regularly tuning in to glowing screens of curious stuff of all sorts, except, of course when they are in my classroom. The students reflect the diverse population of Hawaii. Many are first generation US citizens, immigrants, or have limited proficiency in English. They are respectful, motivated, and take the pride in our school and its rich tradition. Most of our students are college bound. They need rich engaging thought provoking lessons in order to prepare their minds for post high school education.

My Project

How will a computer projector enhance our Math lessons? Whether its leading students through discovery with instructional Math software like Geometer's Sketchpad, GeoGebra, or the Texas Instruments Navigator software, the whole class watching an educational video clip, students sharing their work, or the next big thing, we can't experience these types of teachable moments together as a whole class without a projector. I am certain that we would use this projector daily to analyze graphs, and view cool stuff from the Internet. The applications of this projector in our classroom are truly limitless.

Its use in our classroom will provide students with dynamic visual input. This will help them gain a greater conceptual understanding of Mathematics, and thus be more prepared for college and life.
