They asked me for a novel about Haiti. I daily teach about 170 self described non-readers, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior English students who typically hate to read. However, now they want to know about Haiti. In over crowded classrooms, in an overcrowded school, these kids are voicing a real desire to know more about Haiti than the earthquake and poverty.

Until now, Haiti has been invisible to our kids. As they mobilize, sacrifice, and give to Haitian relief efforts, they want to know the people and the culture of a country they see in frozen images of death and suffering. They ask; "What is Haiti and why are they so poor?" We have no literature from Haiti in our textbooks or library. There is little to no mention of Haiti in either our World or US History books. Our silence teaches them Haiti is invisible.

Our students deserve to understand why Haiti must be saved. While they keep giving out of compassion, they deserve to know the Haiti filled with real human beings who love, laugh, suffer, and endure. This novel reveals more than just Haitian history and culture. As Danticat writes of unfathomable suffering she likewise describes the sheer beauty of Haitian soil and Haitian spirit. Most importantly, Danticat blesses the tie that binds all human hearts to the natural world and blesses all hearts yearning for freedom.

Help us seize this moment and turn this great tragedy into a great opportunity of discovery. Your gift will forge a lasting relationship with Haiti as our students learn that beneath the rubble lies a culture, a history, and stories of families, minds, spirits, and longings so similar to their own.
