Making the Most with a Mimio

My students are in need of a Mimio to enhance our classroom learning.

Mr. Doerges Woodrow Wilson Middle School
Council Bluffs, IA Grades 3-5

Our fifth classroom is trying to stay current in a building that is not driven by technology. Working in a high poverty school (nearly 80%) has its own challenges, but funding is always one of them, so new forms of technology are always the last to be granted to students and teachers, but are what drives both instruction and desire to learn.

I am always looking for a way to "light the fire" within my students, and it seems that in an ever changing world of technology, our school has not kept pace. My students are always eager to learn about new concepts in fifth grade: space, early colonization of the U.S., classification of animals, and my personal Greek Mythology unit that I teach every year to incorporate high-level reading skills, and a writing program that challenges them to think critically and work on self-motivated projects. Keeping that motivation consistent throughout the entire school year is always a challenge, even for an animated and engaging teacher.

By introducing Mimio technology into our classroom, the fire that my students show with new learning will stay lit the entire year. This technology works with what is already in my room, and pulls it all together. By simply suctioning a Mimio onto my white board, my students can write on the board with a special marker that will enable their handwriting to be picked up by the computer and loaded onto the chart. As always, we will still be able to use my computer to display and edit our group writings, but now could use a combination of whiteboard and LCD projector to do this which was previously impossible with a marker and a projector screen...they tend to frown when you write on those. Our reading and writing program focuses heavily on class-created charts to list clear expectations of what good readers and writers show. A Mimio will help us not only create these charts, but display them electronically during our block as well as print them off for individual use and reinforcement. In content areas of science and social studies, this technology can assist in video displays, the skill of note taking, allow us to "write" on the displayed text and pull out important factual information.

You will make it possible for my students to keep their fire lit throughout the year. Cutting edge technology is something that never comes for students in a high poverty area, so it would cause a huge celebration. Using a Mimio in our classroom will: create professional informational charts for gods and creatures while reading the Greek story of "The Lightning Thief", allow students to focus on their personal writing list of needs, learn note-taking skills in an interactive setting, allow a way for students to clearly explain and display their mathematical thinking to other members of the class, create a focused learning environment, and instill pride and an internal desire for each student to excel and display their learning.
