I teach 6th grade English Language Arts to a diverse group of students in a school of progress (a school on its way to meeting all of its Annual Yearly Progress goals with students). Many of my students lack background knowledge and/or optimal vocabulary due to their limited experiences and sociol-economic background. I also teach one block of inclusion - a mixture of regular and special education students.

This year at our school, we want to link Social Studies with the Language Arts. Our students only attend S.S. class every other day, while they see me everyday. For my upcoming unit, I plan to teach Central American history/culture integrated with the novel Esperanza Rising. However, many of my students cannot afford their own book and my school does not have enough copies (even for a class set). I would love for students to be able to make notes in the text to increase their reading comprehension.

When my students have their own copy of a text in front of them, it makes reading personal. They are able to engage in the text by writing notes, drawing diagrams, adding symbols to make sense of what they are reading. Whenever we use a class set, students are not able to make these kinds of notes. If I had enough copies of Esperanza Rising for each student, they could feel a sense of pride and ownership in their learning through this novel study.

Through this donation, you will make it possible for ALL of my students to have their own book to mark in. Those notes not only increase the reading comprehension for my lower-level students, but also give the students an opportunity to engage and connect with what they are reading. Please help us!!
