This is my first year teaching Kindergarten and I have been discovering as I go what it takes to make a classroom of young learners thrive.

It takes creativity and a love of learning to engage 5 and 6 year old students. As important as both these qualities are in a teacher, it is not always enough if the learning environment is sometimes less than ideal. Our classroom is small in size and the seating arrangements are cramped and awkward. We've had to squeeze several mismatched tables together to provide seating for everyone. During the course of the day there are typical complaints about pinched fingers between tables and children moving the tables out of place. These are huge distractions for the students and provide a hazard if little fingers do get caught between edges. The awkward size and shape of the tables also make it difficult to move about the room freely and children frequently trip on chairs. Budget cuts have made it unrealistic to expect new tables and the costs are too high for me to fund by myself.

Three new tables would help streamline our class layout and help avoid those dangerous edges that might catch small fingers. This would provide a more comfortable learning space and in turn help the children to focus on their work and play in a positive way.
