Mrs. S, How Does Your Garden Grow?

My students need a glue gun and glue sticks to adhere the materials to the columns, mosaics to create the picket fence, beads to complete the flowers, butterflies and other insects, feathers to create the birds by the birdbath, pebbles and river rocks are for the stones.

I am an elementary school librarian that wants to create a unique experience and environment for students that is both a welcoming and inspiring place to experience literature. I also want to use the decorated columns to display the Dewey decimal number for specific subjects. Yes, we still use the Dewey decimal system to organize small collections of books in school libraries.

I started this project 2 years ago with an idea that I wanted the media center to be an inviting space for children to read; however, I am finding it difficult to complete the project because it costs more than I thought, and more than I can afford by myself. I get these ideas for making the Dewey decimal system more interesting and to make the library a more vibrant space and then I don't have the money necessary to buy the supplies.

As the idea and project grew so did the amount of supplies I would need and the amount of money it would cost to buy the supplies I needed, in particular the silk flower petals that I wanted to use to embellish the flowers on the column/"trees". I started one flower with about 15 flowers and quickly learned that I would not have enough to finish the flower. Every time I start I am stopped by one obstacle after another and now I wonder whether I will ever finish my vision. We need a stimulating environment that fosters creativity and imagination. I would like to create a "garden" atmosphere in which students can grow and learn in the media center. We need a glue gun and glue sticks to adhere the materials to the columns, mosaics to create the picket fence, beads to complete the flowers, butterflies and other insects, feathers to create the birds by the birdbath, pebbles and river rocks are for the stones. The overall effect is to create 3-D trees, flowers, plants, birds, fence and birdbath in the garden of learning.

You can make it possible for me to create an inviting reading environment that makes the students' eyes light up and brings smiles to their faces. It has been great to see how quickly they have noticed the changes and are drawn to the reading area. Now I need your help to bring it home and finish the "garden" for the children to learn and grow.
