Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher that services children from K-6 with different academic needs and disabilities. Our school is in a district that is considered low economic status. Our children come from single family homes with families that work multiple jobs to try to provide to the basic needs for their children.

My students face many obstacles on a daily basis, they try their hardest to keep straight faces during the day and not let their personnel life interfere with their studies. It is devastating hearing their personal situations. The one thing that I do find helps students to overcome their challenges and motivate them to learn throughout the school day is music. My students love music and they constantly talk about it.

I think it would be great to have an IPod touch so I could download songs and use the music in an academic setting. If I had this IPod and speakers I could download popular music that we could then put to our words, this will help us learn all strategies for solving math problems, learn grammar rules, create songs about the Social Studies and Science topics we are learning this year. One of my students created an amazing rap about Ancient Egypt that would be such a hit to record and play back for the class. In addition, we could post the videos and songs we create on our class webpage for the students' parents and some of my other colleagues to see and share with their classes. Students retain so much more through songs! I am constantly making up silly songs to go with topics for them to remember. Also they would just love to listen to music for the sole purpose of having fun during some down time.

You will make it possible for my students to explore a creative avenue for becoming better students by infusing something they love, MUSIC! I sincerely believe my students will retain more and become better students through adding the IPod Touch and speaker system as a part of our daily lessons.
