My students need 10 Social Studies DVD's, including "Desperate Crossing: The Untold Story of the Mayflower" and "Genius: Leonardo Da Vinci".

My Students

For my students, the television does not act as an educational source. I would like to teach my students how to learn using media as a source. These DVDs could open the door to a whole new exciting world of education for them. They can be engaged in history and become inspired to learn.

My students attend a school that is struggling to achieve higher test scores.

With the use of grants, our school has under gone a major renovation. Technology is built into the school however we are missing many external items to utilize it. Each classroom is equipped with a DVD player however the school does not offer a DVD library for us to use. It is up to the teachers to purchase DVDs to be use in the classroom. Many of my students have parents that work shift work in a nearby hospital and are not home at night to supervise them during homework or even to cook them dinner. I have 75 minutes a day to teach my students history of the world. Many of my students do not have a basic foundation of historical knowledge.

My Project

If these DVDs are purchased, I would be able to reach more of my students. I am not a believer in putting on a movie to teach the students the subject. I do believe though that if they hear the information from the teacher, read about the information from their books, and then see the information brought to life that they will retain more of the information taught. The documentaries would also show different view points of the historical topics for the children to analyzes. Comparing the view points of the DVD presenter and that of the textbook or teacher could teach the children several important skills to pass the standardize test.

I hope that you will take the time to think about how your donation could impact the lives of hundreds of students for the next several years. My hope is that by engaging them in the documentaries that I am requesting, that when they are at home with nothing to do that they will stop on the history channel or the Military channel. Maybe CNN will be on talking about a particular subject that we have just studied and they will watch.
