The students I teach have disABILITIES and require assistance with their academics. The support given to them not only assists them academically but also positively impacts their social-emotional growth. \r\n\r\nThis year, the Math department is using \"Building Thinking Classrooms\". (BTC) It is an approach that has the teacher teach the lesson to the group. The students then break up into groups of three, where they have a \"scribe\", a \"student teacher\", and a \"spy\". The students will work in a vertical upright manner on whiteboards and problem-solve their given problem. When the group thinks they have the answer, they are either confirmed or told to re-check the computation. When the group gets the problem right and they present it to the others, they are using the computer that projects onto the whiteboard. The students love the use of technology and aim for a higher success rate. When the students get it wrong, the \"spy\" will go and look to identify where their mistake is in the equation.\r\nUsing BTC now gives the students the ability to have success and also accept mistakes from their peers. When a peer gives you the assistance you need, it deepens their understanding of learning. \r\n\r\nThank you again for making the Algebra learning so much fun in Building Thinking Classrooms! I put them together as soon as I could. Students started using them immediately. As this is the end of the semester, Building Thinking Classroom techniques are not in place, but we use them to show our homework answers and for review games.\r\nA new semester starts next week. I plan to begin implementing the first phases of BTC. Desks will be placed in threes, and more importantly, students will be working at the boards daily. Instead of lecturing, students will work through progressively difficult problems.
