Thank you so much for taking the time to read our request. I am a second grade teacher at a Title 1 school. This is my second year of teaching and I love it. Being a new teacher, I am just starting to build my classroom. Most of my money has gone to books and I have not been able to take my students on many field trips. English is not the first language for over half of my students. Among them there are a variety languages spoken at home. Research shows how important hands-on learning is for students especially when English is not their first language.

We are going to be starting a unit called, "Producers and Consumers," very soon and I want to be able to record with the video cameras the experiences from farms to factories to stores for my students. By creating these virtual field trips my students will have a much better understanding of what they are learning about. Our current program uses picture cards to tell about the places. This type of learning doesn't make the content come to life. I would also use the cameras to record the students doing science experiments and explaining their process starting with their predictions and finishing with their solution. Ideas are endless for the use of these cameras as they could also be used to help students with their fluency. Students will record themselves reading their writing and this will allow them to hear how they read.

To make these virtual field trips possible, we need two digital video cameras that are kid friendly. At my school alone their are 7 second grade classes. It is impossible to take all of the students on a Nature Walk. Can you imagine if the teachers were able to record a nature walk in Yosemite or Muir Woods and then create a video for the students to watch. My dream would be to choose a few students each time to help create the video for their peers.

If you donate to this project so many students will benefit. We will be reading a book in a few weeks about a bakery. Many of my students have never been to a bakery. With a few students we could go to a bakery and record what we see and give the class a tour of the bakery. With your help we will be making virtual field trips!
