Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach an Introduction to Forensic Science class to 8th grade students. We cover the history of forensic science, forensic DNA analysis, fingerprints, blood splatter and a number of other forensic science topics. It is a fascinating class and hopefully will get students interested in studying science in high school.

The class does not have textbooks. Though a full high school level textbook is not necessary, a new forensic science textbook for middle school students has just been published. As this class is considered an elective, the school does not have resources to purchase this book.

The new middle school forensic science textbook is truly appropriate for my students. Science education in the US is currently facing tremendous obstacles. Anything that we can do to help get young students interested in pursuing science is a benefit. And providing appropriate materials, such as a necessary and user-friendly textbook, is a good way to start.

A teacher can only do so much. In this day and age, helping students takes an effort by additional individuals as well. Many parents of my students are unable to assist their children with their education. So in a class without a textbook, things become much more of a challenge. Your support will help my students tremendously. We, as a society, need to get students interested in science. Your support will help this effort.
