This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Chemistry at a high poverty/inner city school in North Carolina. I have three Chemistry classes that average in size from about 20 to 25 students. This is my first year at the school and last year the pass rate for the end of the year Chemistry exam was an 11%. That being said we have mountains to climb.

Currently, I have 6 working calculators for my students. The worst part about this is that they are all different and some do not even have all of the functions that are necessary to complete higher level Chemistry problems. Also, students must learn how to use all 6 calculators because at any one time they may be sharing one of the 6.

I am requesting 25 solar powered calculators for my classroom. I would prefer solar powered calculators because if they run on batteries they are basically only as good as long as the batteries last. My school does not have the funding for copy paper let alone batteries. I would be forced to pay out of pocket for the batteries, and we all know how expensive that can get. With these calculators it would allow my students to not have to pass around calculators during exams, quizzes, and even in class work. It is hard enough to keep them quiet and focused, and having to shuffle calculators doesn't make the situation any better.

I know I am asking a lot, but you would make the big goals we have in our classroom a reality. The students are motivated, I am motivated, but it hard to learn Chemistry without supplies and materials. The students are invested in the class they just need to be given the chance to succeed.
