While not the poorest in Tennessee, our elementary school is certainly very rural and impoverished in terms of its students' socioeconomic status. We have great kids, caring parents, and dedicated teachers, but we don't have a very large technology budget. This is where you can help.

As a literacy teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to help our struggling readers by instructing them in ways that really grab their attention. I recently read an article about a Minnesota school that uses iPod Touches with a great deal of success, and I think these could also work here in rural Tennessee.

My plan is to set up an iPod Touch center in our classroom where students can practice a variety of skills using different applications on the Touch. I frequently use centers to vary my instruction and to work with small groups, but when the kids are not with me, it's often hard to keep them focused and on track. The introduction of this Touch technology will allow students to practice concrete skills in an engaging way when they are not working directly with me.
