I am a teacher-librarian in a major inner-city area of Illinois. I service students in Pre-K, and third through eighth grades. All the students in the school are low income with many students registering below the poverty line.

I planned a fantastic project for the junior high age kids and tried it with some borrowed books. The problem was that I could not provide enough materials to keep a large class working and engaged. Students really enjoyed the project and I would like to continue the project with the right materials.

With an ample supply of baby name books, students could research their first name. With the small test project I performed, students said they learned so much about themselves through talking to their parents about their name and what they read in baby name books. I feel this research will ultimately lead students toward some self-discovery and pride in who they are.

With your generous gift, I believe this project will empower students by developing a sense of self pride. Engaging students in conversation with their parents regarding their name, and making connections through the information in the baby name books will guide students toward self respect. This project also provides students with an opportunity to practice writing a bibliography using APA style citations.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
