Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Turning lives one page at a time. I teach 9th and 10th grade High School English in California. My school serves a socioeconomically disadvantaged community.

My school services students who face extreme challenges such as poverty and a seemingly lucrative gang life. I am constantly battling with my students and their negative perception about education. They are convinced that they cannot succeed. This is one of the primary reasons why they have reading challenges. There are very few high interest class sets to utilize at my school site. "A Long Way Gone" is a book the fulfills the curriculum requirements at my school and more importantly, will get students to read. I have students that have never finished a book that they started to read.

The 45 copies of "A Long Way Gone" will provide my students with access to a high interest book. They will relate to main character who, although in a different setting, faces similar challenges as they do within their community. As a teacher, this will give me the opportunity to teach traditional concepts through a nontraditional book. Hopefully, this will be a "gateway" book for my students. This may kick start a love for reading.

Your generosity will provide my students with a reading experience that is quite rare in schools. Most schools have class sets of traditional books that are irrelevant to kids and so foreign that they turn kids off to reading. "A Long Way Gone" is a powerful story about some kids who, like a lot of my students, have lost their innocence because of their environment. However, the book provides a sense of hope as well. Your donation will help fuel a love for reading which will hopefully lead to academic success in students that have lost faith in the educational system. I thank you in advance for being a champion for kids.
