Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an Academic Intervention Services (AIS) teacher, I teach basic reading skills and strategies to first graders in New York failing to achieve success with beginning reading skills. Many of the children are from families on public assistance or are children with special needs such as learning or reading disabilities.

It is mid-year and these first graders have not mastered benchmarks in literacy and are experiencing difficulty with initial reading skills and continue to fall further behind as their peers progress.

Sight word rings will provide my students with increased opportunities to practice sight words at home with family members in order to help them become proficient readers. Further, these sight-word take home rings will assist these at-risk 1st graders with recognizing and identifying sight words found in books that should be able to read and enjoy all by themselves.

You will make it possible for these eager first graders to develop sight word proficiency and become proficient readers not only by the end of first grade, but in grades 2, 3, 4 and beyond.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
