Increasing Fitness: A Basketball in Each Athlete's Hand

My student-athletes need 5 basketballs, whistles, a hand pump, pressure gauge, inflating needles, dry-erase full court clipboard, and a mesh bag to keep all of the equipment together.

I currently work with students, grades 7 and 8 Social Studies (approximately 70% free and reduced lunch eligible), in a small rural community in northern Maine.

State and federal funding covers limited program offerings for the students. Funding for supplies is kept at a very basic level. Although outdoor activities are abundant in rural Maine, proper instruction, and basic fundamentals for competing in basketball are often considered above and beyond the core curriculum.

Our students love to compete, and I want to improve their chances for success as they mature, as well as increasing their overall fitness by supplying my student-athletes with their own basketball to practice with, whistles, hand pump, gauge, needles, dry-erase full court clipboard, and 1 mesh bag to keep all of the equipment together.

Although Title-IX provides for equal opportunity among both girls and boys in athletics, often girls do not have have available to them the same quality of equipment as they should. I want to put a basketball in the hand of every player on the team to improve their technique and overall fitness.
