Please help the future leaders of our country! I teach all subject areas in a fourth grade elementary classroom in Arkansas. Reading and writing skills are an integral part of our curriculum. Most of our students live in the surrounding neighborhood, and our school is classified as low socio-economic and Title I.

Many of the students in my classroom come from home environments where literacy and reading are not supported on an everyday basis. The majority of parents have poor literacy skills themselves, and they do not understand the instructional practices in the classroom. In today's society it is essential for students to be able to communicate effectively and construct meaning from text. If they do not possess these skills, they will not be capable productive members of society.

In order for students to practice and maintain language skills in the classroom, I would like to purchase vocabulary kits and games. Not only will they be working independently to maintain the skills they have learned in the classroom, but they will also be able to practice strategies they have learned while reading on their own, writing independently, and while taking standardized tests. With the purchase of the Vocabulary Center from Lakeshore, students will improve their everyday oral language skills as well.

Your donation will impact the future of our country. Your generosity will allow for students to be well-spoken, well-read members of society. It will give them the skills to be confident communicators. By funding this project, my students will be able to function in society and give back.
