I am a reading specialist for over 400 students in grades 6-8. We are a small, very old school with a very diverse range of students. My job is to work with struggling students to increase their reading ability and general knowledge about our language, which in turn will increase their success in all subject areas.

It seems that more and more lower income students are coming unprepared for the literary demands of middle school. Part of this comes from their lack of exposure to books and being read to at a younger age. Students gain an understanding of how language is used by listening to how it is used in everyday situations. This is the first step in developing a strong literacy base. Students are often no longer afforded the opportunity of being read to after elementary school. Middle School students, especially lower performing students still need this constant exposure to how language should be used. How can you help?

Student can expand their literacy understanding by being exposed to the proper way to use language. Books on tape are a great way for students to be exposed to good literature and consequently good language use. I would like to have listening centers available for students in middle school. This is an excellent way for students to experience the correct use of language.

Long ago people both young and old were exposed to Bards, who would spin yarns about the world around them. This was how language continued to develop. You can be a Bard to many students year after year by gifting a listening center and books on tape to my deserving students this year and for years to come. Help us continue to tell a tale!!!!
