Discovering Dystopias

My students need 30 copies of "The Giver" in order to begin literature circles.

The state of Hawaii does not have enough money to pay for its teachers for the entire school year, let alone buy materials. I teach 8th grade English and Reading. The school population is described by the Accountability Resource Center Hawaii (ARCH) as, "rural" and "ethnically diverse." Primary ethnicities found within the school are Filipino, Hawaiian, Japanese, Portuguese, Latino, Samoan, Caucasian, and mixed, with around 35% of the student population receiving free or reduced cost lunches.

The Hawaii Department of Education is currently facing many pressing issues including huge budget cuts and furlough days. Because the education budget was cut so severely, teachers have been asked to stop working for at least 17 days of the school year. With this drop in funds, many schools are finding it difficult to purchase adequate supplies and materials for their campuses. Students at the middle grade levels (6, 7, 8) are at that make-it-or-break-it point when it comes to loving or hating school. Eighth grade is likely the last chance educators have of hooking students into reading. The majority of my students are "below grade-level" readers and research shows that students who do poorly at reading, tend to turn off to academics.

By supplying our classroom with 30 copies of "The Giver" along with the Teacher's Guide for Literature Circles, I hope to engage our students in reading for pleasure, which translate into a lifelong skill. The more reading we have our children doing, the easier it will be for them and the more they will enjoy it. "The Giver" is appropriate for readers at the 6th grade level and beyond, and most of my readers are performing at around the 6th grade level.

Your donation will make it possible for children to learn to love reading, not for its value as a skill, but for the worlds reading will open up to their minds. "The Giver" has long been a favorite of young and old alike because of its ability to increase wonder and curiosity about our world and the future.
