It's winter time and students can't run, but they still deserve to have some fun! I teach at a charter school where students attend school for 8 1/2 hours a day. 5 classes of students (grades 2 and 3) spend an hour each day with me doing learning centers, and spend an additional 20 minutes a day having indoor recess. We have a limited amount of materials at the school and the students deserve to have games and art supplies.

My students are very interested in playing games and making art projects. However, I want everything in school to serve an educational purpose so I selected a few items that my students would enjoy that will help them with subject matter or communication skills.

My students need Checkers to practice playing fair, verbal skills, and brainstorming strategies. My students need rush hour to practice logic skills and differentiating between horizontal and vertical. My students need Apples 2 Apples to enhance their vocabulary and gain an understanding of nouns (red cards) and adjectives (green cards). Students will also get to practice synonyms, as they are listed on every card. My students need self-checking word problem puzzles to practice identifying the correct operation based on clue words and solving a problem. My students need pipe cleaners to attach to tissue paper flowers. They will give these away to honor individuals that make a difference in their lives. My students need watercolor paints to create pictures about topics of their choice that they have learned about: China, dinosaurs, tornadoes, the solar system.
