Stepping into English

My students need 3 Hewlett Packard laptop computers capable of running Rosetta Stone software which will help them attain English fluency.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It's Greek to them! I teach fourth grade in a predominantly low income, English learner community. Of my 34 students, over 2/3 of them come from families whose first language is something other than English.

Have you ever tried water skiing? Even if you haven't, you probably know you should learn how to swim before you strap on your skis! Well, for a lot of my students, the skis come first. They are immersed into a classroom where they are taught math, history, and science in English, before they have a working command of the English language. Due to the lack of resources and time to help these students become proficient in English, they often miss out on taking courses in their areas of interest as they grow older because they get "stuck" in English learner classes. The courses they miss out on are often ones that would benefit them in making career choices or give them an advantage when applying to colleges and universities.

After doing a great deal of research on the Rosetta Stone program, I am confident that the program can help my students excel at not only speaking English but reading and writing it. It is my goal to have three stations in my class where students are able to go continually throughout the day to work at their level on their English proficiency. My school is able to purchase three programs for me to pilot in my classroom, but I do not have the computers to run them. It is my hope that through the success of a pilot program in my class, I will be able to eventually set up a small lab of these HP computers that are not only available to students, but also to parents on a check-out basis. As we know, education begins at home, and if parents are willing to learn English along side their children, the results will be quicker and more powerful! As icing on the cake, as everything falls into place with my English learners, I hope to eventually have the funds to purchase Rosetta Stone programs in different languages so that my high achieving students can have a challenge program as well and learn foreign languages in which they have an interest.

With your generosity, the lives of many students in my community can be on the path to brighter future. With the skills they need in the English language, these students will have a much better shot at getting into the courses they need, the colleges they want, and the careers where they can make a difference in our world. Please give me the opportunity to show them that we know they can achieve whatever they dream!
