I am the media specialist at a middle school in Minnesota serving 6th through 8th grade. We have a very diverse student body, including a large population of Latino and low income students.

This year, working with an ESL teacher in my school, I started an after school club for Latinas. We invited at-risk girls, identified by classroom teachers and school counselors, to attend meetings once a week. Our sessions focus on self-esteem building, goal setting and literacy. The girls we are working with have experienced limited success in school and face considerable obstacles with academic skills, poverty, cross-cultural communication and peer pressure. We strive to help them build skills and confidence to meet these challenges head-on.

While we have been able to construct activities and tap community resources in the areas of goal setting and self esteem, literacy has been more of a struggle. Our media center has a wide selection of single titles in Spanish, but we lack class or small group sets of the same title to use for structured literacy instruction in Spanish. Obtaining a class set of "La Casa En Mango Street" would meet that need for us, by providing a high interest, culturally relevant title at a level appropriate for our students, most of whom speak Spanish fluently but read and write at a lower level.

Your help with this project will enable a group of underachieving students to reach their true potential. By working on Spanish literacy, our students will improve their overall reading comprehension and fluency in English and Spanish. Once they are able to read and write in Spanish, making them truly bilingual, our students will be able to use this asset to compete academically and in the job market later in their lives.
