Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Highly motivated dual language students eagerly await math activities and manipulatives. I teach third grade in a dual language school. The purpose of the dual language program is to have highly functional bilingual students in English and Spanish. My school is surrounded with daily, hourly and weekly motels. If that were not bad enough drugs and gangs are evident. The majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. Also, there are some students that are considered homeless.

My goal as a teacher is to not only produce bilingual students in English and Spanish, but to make them fully competent in each of the subject areas. Math is a universal language. With the state mandated test upon us, I like to continuously reinforce previously taught skills. Our class does not have any readily accessible activities to do this. Also, the manipulatives are not enough for a small group that needs extra support.

Some of the resources, I know will be very beneficial for my students that I have now and in the future are the bingo games. I choose both sets due to the fact that they have each of the different areas in math such as, geometry, place value, money, multiplication/division, addition/subtraction, time and fractions. Each one of the games, will reinforce the vocabulary associated with that area. Second, the match-ups will be a great center activity that the students can do independently or with a partner. The weight and area measurement center would provide hands-on activities that I could do with a small math group or the students can do in a center. The coin stamps with the ink pads will help them identify the coins, and add and subtract money.

Your wonderful donation to our cause would immensely provide the much needed resources our class needs to improve test scores as well as keep the momentum of learning going.
